Paper Tower
Ideation Sketch + Paper Prototype
When being assigned to use paper geometric components to build a self-standing model, Martin and I thought about triangle shape since it was a stable shape. Besides, it would be interesting to make the shape like a leaf. As for the basement, we attempted to use rectangle-shape to support the structure. Our first draft is shown below:
After several trials, we found that the leaf-shape worked well, but there were still some problems about connecting each component to build a structure. We were not satisfied with the shape of basement, because it was quite hard to achieve self-standing. Thus, we made a similar leaf-shape with four corners to be the basement, Meanwhile, we tried other shapes such as rectangle inspired by Chinese traditional architectural style. Our refined draft is shown as below:
Now I tried to assemble these components to make a space by a stapler.
After several trials, I have confirmed my final sketch with accurate size in millimeter:
CAD Design and Refinement
Before printing, Andy noticed the hole might be too large, and after measuring the size of the nail by vernier caliper, I adjust the radius of the hole to 1.5mm. The outcome is as follow:
Assembly
I attempted to create curves by utilizing the tension, and it worked really well. I even made a enclosed space looking like a box. These images show my exploration on different structures.

Final Outcome
During the exploration, I found that it was possible to build a flower-shaped structure or a tree-shaped structure. Thus I decided to follow it to build my final outcome.
